The business heart of Manhattan, where skyscrapers soar overhead, and the streets are packed with people on the move, Midtown is home to many of the top sights in New York — the Empire State Building, the Museum of Modern Art (MOMA) and the United Nations. One of the world's great shopping districts, 5th Avenue and 57th Street between Lexington and 7th avenues is where you'll find some of the biggest names in New York retailing, as well as the crème de la crème of foreign designer boutiques. Recently, mega-theme stores such as Warner Bros. and Nike Inc. have begun to compete with old masters like Bergdorfs and Tiffany's.
The place where the ball drops on New Year's Eve, Times Square is still one of the city's principal energy centers and is experiencing a remarkable renaissance as we speak. Over thirty major Broadway theaters are all nearby, as are some of the city's largest hotels and thousands of excellent restaurants. Just a short walk away is Theater Row, a string of six intimate off-Broadway houses on the south side of 42nd Street between 9th and 10th avenues, and Restaurant Row.
