Whitney Museum of American Art
Founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, The Whitney houses the world's foremost collection of 20th-century American art. Almost every significant American artist of the last century is represented in the collection: Hopper, Stella, Glackens, Demuth, de Kooning, Rothko, O'Keeffe, the list goes on and on. Apart from the modern masters, the museum also focuses on contemporary artists. The Whitney Biennial is the highest-profile contemporary art showcase in the country--and a fairly reliable source of controversy. Exhibitions at the museum come in all shapes and sizes, from the blockbuster to the scholarly. Other events include lecture, film, and video series.

The unique building was designed by Marcel Breuer....
