Whitney Museum of American Art |
Founded in 1931 by Gertrude Vanderbilt Whitney, The Whitney houses the world's foremost collection of 20th-century American art. Almost every significant American artist of the last century is represented in the collection: Hopper, Stella, Glackens, Demuth, de Kooning, Rothko, O'Keeffe, the list goes on and on. Apart from the modern masters, the museum also focuses on contemporary artists. The Whitney Biennial is the highest-profile contemporary art showcase in the country--and a fairly reliable source of controversy. Exhibitions at the museum come in all shapes and sizes, from the blockbuster to the scholarly. Other events include lecture, film, and video series. |
